Canada announces temporary measures to support family members affected by the crisis in Haiti

Of : Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada Press release 23 May 2024, Ottawa – As the security situation in Haiti remains unstable, the Government of Canada continues to take measures to help those affected by the violence and deteriorating security conditions.

Today, the Honorable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced temporary measures to support family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have left Haiti, as well as nationals of Haiti who are already in Canada and who are unable to return home.

Starting May 23, 2024, Haitians in Canada with valid temporary resident status can apply for an open work permit, a study permit or an extension of their status free of charge. This includes family members of all nationalities who arrived with temporary resident status through assisted departures from Haiti. In addition, eligible individuals will be able to benefit from three months of coverage under the Interim Federal Health Program.

These measures will help keep families together and provide Haitians in Canada with a safe place to study, work and stay. More information on eligibility requirements and how to apply can be found at site web d’IRCC

Quick facts Canada carried out assisted departures from Haiti, which made it possible to successfully transport 681 people, including 435 with Canadian citizenship, 111 with permanent residence and 135 with temporary residence. There are approximately 44,000 Haitians who have valid temporary resident status in Canada We continue to prioritize requests within the framework of the dedicated humanitarian route aimed at granting permanent residence to nationals of Colombia, Haiti and Venezuela.
