Outgoing President Luis Abinader won a decisive victory in the first round of the Dominican presidential election, thus obtaining a new four-year term. Abinader, who campaigned by highlighting his economic successes and his strict policy on Haitian immigration, was able to convince a majority of voters.

“The people have expressed themselves clearly… I accept the trust I have received and the obligation not to disappoint. I will not disappoint you”, Abinader told his cheering supporters.

Partial results from the National Electoral Council show that Abinader received 58.87% of the vote, well ahead of former president Leonel Fernandez, who obtained 27.25%. Abel Martinez places himself in third position with 10.60%, while the other candidates are left behind.

In his victory speech, Abinader reaffirmed his commitment to being “the president of all Dominicans” and promised to continue his efforts to strengthen the country’s security and economy. Supporters of Luis Abinader celebrated the victory enthusiastically at campaign headquarters, chanting “Four more years, four more years.”
