Duolingo English Test: an affordable and effective alternative to TOEFL for studying in the United States.

After participating in the annual DETCon24 event, Kichemy Dorcena, a scholarship student from Berea College in the United States, captivated netizens by sharing information on using the Duolingo English Test (DET) as a viable alternative to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language or Test of English as a Foreign Language) for international students wishing to study in the United States and other English-speaking countries.

Many know Duolingo as an app for learning languages, but Dorcena highlighted a lesser-known aspect: the Duolingo English Test department. He presented five significant advantages of DET over TOEFL:

1- Affordable cost: The DET costs around 30% of the price of the TOEFL, making it a financially attractive option for many students.

2- Flexibility: Candidates can take the test from home, at any time, offering great flexibility regarding TOEFL dates and locations.

3- Speed of results: While the TOEFL takes approximately two weeks to provide results, DET candidates receive theirs in just two days.

4- Sending Free Results: Candidates can send their certified results to as many schools as they want at no additional cost, unlike TOEFL which charges $25 per institution.

5- Shorter test duration: The DET lasts around one hour, while the TOEFL can take three to four hours, saving candidates valuable time.

Additionally, Dorcena revealed an additional benefit: the ability to take the DET for free. Many American universities offer discount codes for the test, allowing students to take it at no cost. Dorcena himself benefited from this opportunity.

The young scholarship student mentions that it is possible for an interested person to visit the Duolingo site to obtain more information. He adds that there is an option to practice the test several times before taking it.

In addition to his advice on DET, Dorcena was invited to speak about the differences between Gen Z and previous generations at the event. He also took the opportunity to visit Duolingo’s general department and meet with company professionals, reinforcing his commitment to education and innovation.

Kichemy Dorcena’s testimony highlights the importance of DET as an affordable and practical alternative to TOEFL for international students aspiring to study in English-speaking countries, providing a more accessible route to international education.

Originally from the commune of Delmas in Haiti, Kichemy Dorcéna is one of the scholarship holders of Berea College in the United States. The 21-year-old compatriot was selected among the 40 admitted out of more than 1,000 candidates around the world. Former student of the Salesian Fathers (Dominique Savio College), he chose to specialize in computer science and economics.
