Statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Canada Day: A Celebration of the Country’s History, Diversity and Future
On the occasion of Canada Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent an appropriate message, highlighting the importance of this day and the rich and complex history of the country, which for him is the best in the world.
“Happy Canada Day!” he said, inviting everyone to celebrate Canada’s people, land and history, a history that stretches back more than 157 years and includes the Indigenous peoples who have lived on these lands since time immemorial.
Justin Trudeau recalled the sacrifices made by Canadians over the years, including the soldiers who risked their lives during the Normandy landings to defend freedom around the world. “Freedom – even that of those across an ocean and of generations of people they would never meet – was worth fighting for.”
The Prime Minister also addressed historical and current injustices, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to the path of reconciliation. He said the country’s strength lies not despite its differences, but because of them.
He praised Canadians for their efforts during the pandemic, from first responders battling wildfires to members of the Canadian Armed Forces defending democracy and freedom. “Together, let’s continue to make this incredible country of ours even better,” he encouraged, calling for building more inclusive communities and removing barriers to create opportunities for all.
Ultimately, Trudeau called on all Canadians to reaffirm their commitment to making Canada a better place, celebrating shared achievements and working toward a bright future marked by peace, freedom, prosperity and fairness.
This is why our country is the best place in the world. Let’s continue to make it even better together,” he concluded.
