2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Haiti wins close to the wire and avoids a bad start

By Ketelène Guirand

Thin and short victory but how precious for the Haitian senior men’s selection in Barbados this Thursday, June 6 in a very complicated match at the Wildey Turf stadium (2-1).

This is the first outing of the Haitian selection for the qualification for the 2026 World Cup against Saint Lucia on the Barbados side. Despite a very exciting start to the match in a group very within the reach of the Grenadiers but Saint Lucia showed themselves to be very diligent in their match even if it was not war football but they were going to score in the first half thanks to Ganiggia Elva in the 18th minute of play on an unappreciated action by Haitian defender JK Duverne. Furthermore, some actions by Sébastien Migné’s men did not materialize with a view to a possible equalization.

On the other hand, the Saint Lucians were very solid defensively. A half-hearted performance for the Grenadiers in this first period because they did not find the net.

In the second half, the two-tones were more enterprising in front of the goals and finally scored very early in the game following a corner from Fafa Picault taken by Jean Kevin Duverne with a header in the 47th minute of play. A second goal came in the 77th minute. minute by Duckens Nazon allowing the Haitian selection to take the advantage until the final whistle.

The next outing for Haiti will be on June 9, 2024 against the Barbadian football selection.
