Trade between the Dominican Republic and Haiti experienced a significant contraction, marking a significant drop of -29% during the first quarter of this year, as revealed by official data from the Dominican General Directorate of Customs.

According to these statistics, between January and March 2023, Dominican exports to Haiti amounted to 273.8 million US dollars. However, for the same period this year, these figures dropped drastically to just US$194.2 million, an absolute decrease of US$79.6 million.

This significant decline in the value of Dominican exports to Haiti intensified from September of the previous year. This period coincides with the Dominican government’s decision to close the border due to the construction of the canal on the Massacre River.

Despite the continuation of work on the Haitian side, the Dominican authorities finally opted for the reopening of the markets, thus responding to the concerns of local exporters facing substantial losses.

Over the whole of 2023, Dominican exports to Haiti reached a total of 857 million US dollars, marking a reduction of 17.5% compared to the 1,039 million US dollars exported in 2022.
