40 people are missing and several others seriously injured in a boat fire on the night of Tuesday, July 16 to Wednesday, July 17, 2024. This tragedy occurred when the boat left Cap-Haïtien, near Fort Saint Michel, heading for Providenciales.
The Northern Police confirmed that about fifty Haitians were on board the boat. Inspector Arold Jean, spokesman for the police in the North, told local media that the Cap-Haïtien coastguard rescued 37 people. Of these survivors, 7 are seriously injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital in the city.
Survivors’ accounts report that about 40 other passengers, including the boat’s captain, are missing. The tragedy took place at sea, near Fort-Lilette, close to Labadee. The fire was reportedly started by a candle lit by one of the passengers who was beginning a voodoo ceremony, while gasoline was on board.
In the face of this tragedy, the Police urges the population to avoid illegal travel that puts their lives in danger. A thorough investigation has been opened to identify and arrest those responsible for organizing this trip.
