The Port-au-Prince Prosecutor’s Office prohibits any citizen from carrying a weapon during public gatherings.

In a press note dated February 5, 2024 bearing the signature of the Government Commissioner, Me Jean Edler Guillaume, the Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince prohibits any citizen from carrying a weapon on public roads during gatherings.

Through this note, the Prosecutor’s Office says it takes note of certain demonstrations taking place in the capital in recent days while recognizing the right of the population to demonstrate, in accordance with article 31 of the 1987 constitution stipulating that the freedom of unarmed association and assembly for political, economic, social, cultural or any other peaceful purposes is guaranteed.

In this sense, the note underlines that from February 5, any citizen caught with a weapon on the public highway during gatherings will be hunted down by the police and brought before the courts as part of a fair trial and it is the same for those who opt for violence by deliberately attacking lives and property.
