The American Coast Guard announced, yesterday Tuesday, February 20, 2024, that it had repatriated 72 migrants to the Dominican Republic. They were intercepted aboard a boat in the Mona Channel in Puerto Rico waters.

The ship carrying the migrants was spotted by the crew of a Customs and Border Protection multi-purpose aircraft southwest of the Puerto Rican municipality of Aguadilla.

The US Coast Guard clarified that among these 72 migrants traveling in the Mona Channel, 68 declared themselves to be Dominican citizens, and the other 4 declared to be of Haitian nationality. This was informed by coast guard Joseph Doyle who intercepted the ship and took the migrants “safely” on board.

“The Coast Guard works daily with our local, federal and Dominican Navy partners in our shared determination to end illegal maritime migration voyages in the Mona Channel,” said Commander Gerard Wenk, Guard response leader. coastal area of ​​San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to publicly available data, the United States Coast Guard intercepted 24 irregular voyages in the Mona Channel and waters near Puerto Rico, arresting a total of 780 migrants, including 742 Dominicans, from October 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024.
