Port-au-Prince, Haiti — Garry Conille, current UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, was chosen by the Presidential Transitional Council as the new Prime Minister of Haiti. This decision follows the hearing of the five candidates pre-selected for the position.
Born on February 26, 1966, Garry Conille has a professional profile combining medical expertise and extensive experience in international development.
A gynecologist by training, he earned a master’s degree in health administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Conille also worked for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Africa, and was United Nations Resident Coordinator in Burundi and Jamaica.
Within the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, he served as Assistant Secretary General for Programs and Operations. His varied experiences demonstrate his ability to manage complex projects in diverse contexts.
Conille is also known for his collaboration with economist Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Sachs, renowned for his expertise in sustainable development and poverty reduction, has advised numerous governments and international organizations. He played a key role in the design and implementation of economic policies aimed at combating crises and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
Garry Conille was particularly active in Haiti after the devastating earthquake of 2010, participating in the distribution of international aid. This experience prepared him well to understand and respond to the unique challenges facing Haiti.
Dr Conille already held the position of Prime Minister under the presidency of Michel Joseph Martelly, but had to resign a few months later, due to deep disagreements with the leaders of the Tet Kale movement.
During the hearing for the position of Prime Minister, all presidential advisors, with the exception of Régine ABRAHAM and Laurent ST-CYR who were traveling abroad, took part in the evaluation. Conille’s choice was welcomed in many quarters, where he is recognized as an individual with deep knowledge of development challenges and significant experience in working with the global community.
