Caribbean countries are on alert as Hurricane Beryl strengthens and becomes extremely dangerous.
Much of the southeastern Caribbean is on alert this Sunday as Beryl strengthens to become the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with forecasters predicting an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Beryl, currently swirling in the Atlantic Ocean about 460 miles (750 kilometers) east of Barbados, is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surges when it reaches the Windward Islands early Monday.
Warning that the storm continues to intensify rapidly, the NHC predicts it will become an “extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane” as it hits Caribbean communities.
