The Ministry of Environment (MOE), Heifer International and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced the official launch on Thursday, June 27, of the project “Improving Climate Resilience in the Trois-Rivières Region of Haiti through Integrated Flood Management”. This important initiative is part of the fight against environmental and climate challenges in the northern region of the country.

It aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities to the devastating effects of climate change by implementing sustainable flood management and ecosystem restoration strategies in the Trois-Rivières watershed.

This eight-year project also aims to contribute to the paradigm shift objective promoted by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), by promoting sustainable development that is resilient to climate change. This resilience will be strengthened by improving the adaptive capacity of the population surrounding the Trois-Rivières (TR) watershed, through the implementation of a transformative and holistic approach.

It will be implemented in 33 communal sections, spread across 7 municipalities in the departments of Nord, Artibonite and Nord-Ouest, namely Plaisance, Pilate, Marmelade, Gros-Morne, Bassin Bleu, Chansolme and Port-de-Paix. Funding will be provided by the Green Climate Fund, Heifer International and UNDP.

A series of innovative ecosystem solutions will be implemented to address the region’s environmental and climate challenges, with the following three main expected results:

Implementation of ecosystem-based flood management solutions on 25,440 hectares throughout the watershed; Adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices, optimization of value chains and establishment of social safety nets to promote land management and reduce degradation in the watershed; Strengthening the governance and capacities of state authorities for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) resilient to climate change; This project represents a significant step forward for the Trois-Rivières region in Haiti, paving the way for profound socio-economic and environmental transformations. The project highlights the strong commitment of Heifer International and UNDP, working closely with the Ministry of Environment to establish innovative and resilient ecological practices in the face of climate challenges. Through this synergy, the Trois-Rivières region benefits from a sustainable development orientation that will foster a more prosperous and environmentally friendly future for its communities.
