FIFAC 2024 in Guyana: Gessica Gnus assumes the presidency of the jury

From October 8 to 12, 2024, the 6th edition of the Amazon-Caribbean International Documentary Film Festival (FIFAC) will take place at Camp de la Transportation, in Guyana. The organizing team has chosen Haitian director Gessica Généus to head the jury responsible for awarding the prizes.

For the 2024 edition, which will take place from October 8 to 12 at the Camp de la Transportation in Saint-Laurent du Maroni, Haitian director and actress Gessica Généus has been appointed to chair the jury, succeeding Christiane Taubira. An emblematic figure of Haitian cinema, Gessica is recognized for her artistic and social commitment. Her filmography, marked by poignant and relevant works, has earned her international recognition. In 2021, her first feature film “Freda” was selected at Cannes.

At 17, young Gessica had her first role in the feature film Barikad by director Richard Senecal. Later, she received a scholarship to take drama classes in Paris where she joined the Acting International of Paris and was able to perfect her art. With her medium, Généus undertook to tell the story of her schizophrenic mother through her documentary Douvan jou ka leve which received the FIFAC Grand Prize in 2019, this festival of which she will chair the jury this year.

“The Amazon-Caribbean International Documentary Film Festival is an international competition of films from the Caribbean and the Amazon and a place for exchanges, sharing and professional discoveries, with the ambition of giving voice to a creative and mixed sector”, summarizes the FIFAC website, which offers a platform for voices that are often underrepresented.

Dedicated to the promotion of documentary films from the Amazon-Caribbean region from Guyana, this festival was created in 2019 by the Pôle Image Maroni – AVM, in accordance with the political wishes of France Télévisions Outre-mer and the city of Saint-Laurent du Maroni.
