Despite the withdrawal of the 2024-2025 Finance Bill and the dismissal of almost his entire cabinet, the Kenyan population continues to campaign for the resignation of President William Ruto. Once again this Tuesday, July 16, 2024, several dozen Kenyans demonstrated in the streets of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, to demand that the country’s head of state step down from power. As has been the case since mid-June, the Kenyan police dispersed the anti-Ruto demonstrators with tear gas.

THE HAITI FACTOR, July 16, 2024._At the initiative of young men and women from “Generation Z” (young people born after 1997), a new day of peaceful demonstration was organized on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

These young people are still demonstrating with the same objective: “to demand the resignation of President William Ruto”. And this, despite the withdrawal of the 2024-2025 finance bill.

“Ruto must go,” the protesters chanted throughout their route, several media outlets in the country reported.

To disperse the crowd, Kenyan police used tear gas and water cannons, Kenyan media reported.

In response, the protesters criticised and denounced the behaviour described as “brutal” displayed against them by the Kenyan police.

“The police are brutalizing us, while we are demonstrating peacefully. Many young protesters have been injured. However, we are not armed, we only carry a flag, that of our country to claim our rights and it is not a weapon,” angry demonstrators spat into the microphone of the local and international press.

Kenyan police officers dispersed Tuesday’s protest with tear gas, four (4) days after the appointment on Friday, July 12, of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja. He succeeded Japhet Koome who had resigned to President William Ruto after the first street protests left at least 39 dead.
