Ruben Louis, a young Haitian, wins first prize for the best poster at the Poisson 2024 conference.

Ruben Louis, a young Haitian mathematician, distinguished himself by winning the first prize for the best poster at the Poisson 2024 conference in Naples, Italy. In an interview with Juno7, he shared his inspiring journey and the details of this prestigious recognition.

The prize won by Ruben Louis at the Poisson 2024 conference is for the best scientific poster. The conference, one of the largest meetings in Poisson geometry, attracts researchers from all over the world. For the 2024 edition, 185 researchers participated, with 43 candidates in the poster competition.

Ruben Louis’ poster presented an abstract of his paper “Nash resolution of singular Lie algebroids,” published in April 2024 on arxiv.org. This work uses techniques from algebraic geometry to address resolutions of singularities in differential geometry, including revisiting techniques for blowing up smooth manifolds.

Ruben Louis attributes the distinction of his poster to the originality of his approach and the clarity of his presentation, illustrated by precise visualizations. He was able to make complex concepts accessible and show the practical impact of his research.

Prior to this victory, Ruben Louis had already been recognized for his academic excellence, notably by winning the first prize winner at the ENS and the “2023 Best Thesis Prize” from theUniversity of Lorraine.

Ruben Louis dedicates this award to his family, friends, and all Haitians who believe in their dreams despite the obstacles. He concludes with a message of encouragement for young Haitian scholars: “Never lose hope. Even in the most difficult times, continue to believe in your abilities and work with determination. You have within you the strength to overcome challenges and achieve your dreams. Together, we can build a better future.”

A passionate man born in Torbeck

Born in Torbeck, Sud Department, Haiti, Ruben Louis grew up in a family of artisans, with his father, an ironworker. His passion for mathematics began with a fascination for musical harmonies and the distances between the notes of the guitar, an instrument he mastered at a professional level. This taste for mathematics led him to the École Normale Supérieure of the State University of Haiti, where he distinguished himself each year as the laureate of his class.

Spotted by French teachers, Ruben Louis was able to pursue a master’s degree in Poitiers, France, thanks to an Erasmus+ scholarship. He then obtained a doctoral scholarship in pure mathematics at the University of Lorraine, successfully defending his thesis on November 12, 2022. After an ATER position at the University of Lorraine, he is currently a postdoctoral researcher shared between Jilin University in China and the University of Göttingen in Germany.
