Inter-American Development Bank, Education Above All Foundation and Global Partnership for Education Join Forces to Improve Access to Quality Education in Haiti

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) have launched a five-year project to support education in Haiti. The initiative aims to improve access to quality education for vulnerable children, including those at risk of dropping out of primary school, out-of-school children, and students with disabilities.

With a $44 million grant for the five-year project, the Ministry of National Education (MENFP) will be able to strengthen its information management system, implement effective curriculum reforms and ensure high-quality sector management, the IDB said in a statement.

The project, she added, will also address economic issues and food insecurity faced by Haitian households by providing school meals. In addition, it will improve attendance and retention through catch-up classes, reintegrating children into schools and strengthening the quality of teaching and learning.

IDB President Ilan Goldfajn said: “Our commitment to Haiti remains unwavering. With the fondation Education Above Allthe Global Partnership for Education and other partners, we are improving access to quality education for vulnerable youth, providing school meals, remedial classes and improving school retention with the aim of offering Haitian youth a better future.”

“Supporting access to and retention of quality primary education in Haiti is not only a moral imperative, but a strategic investment in the country’s long-term stability and development. This partnership marks an important step in our mission to ensure that the most vulnerable children – regardless of their circumstances – have access to quality education,” said Fahad Al Sulaiti, CEO of the Education Above All Foundation.

The deteriorating security situation in Haiti has compounded the challenges children face in accessing and maintaining education. In the capital, Port-au-Prince, many children in areas controlled by armed groups are being denied their right to education due to school closures caused by violence.
