Jeff Vertilus, an escapee from the National Penitentiary, apprehended by the Southeast police.
As part of the security measures put in place by the South-East Police Department, an escapee from the National Penitentiary named Jeff Vertilus, aged 29, was apprehended on Monday May 20, 2024, in Découzé, commune of Jacmel, reported a note from the PNH.
During his hearing, Jeff Vertilus admitted to having escaped from the National Penitentiary on Saturday March 2, 2024, taking advantage of an attack carried out by armed individuals against this prison center.
Note that the police had issued a wanted notice against all the escapees, and formal instructions were issued to the various jurisdictions to apprehend them. The arrest of Vertilus is part of this search and restoration of public order operation.
It should be recalled that during the night of Saturday March 2, 2024, gangs attacked the national penitentiary in downtown Port-au-Prince, allowing the escape of approximately 3,000 inmates. A similar action also took place at the Croix-des-Bouquets civil prison, where more than 1,500 inmates escaped.
