BINUH says it recorded more than 2,500 people killed or injured during the first quarter of this year.

The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) published this Friday a report on the human rights situation in Haiti, during the first quarter of 2024.

More than 2,500 people have been killed or injured in violence orchestrated by armed gangs. These figures represent an increase of more than 53% compared to the period spanning October to December 2023, the report highlights.

This same report also specifies that the first quarter of 2024 has become the most violent period in at least two years.

The United Nations Office highlights that this year during the first quarter, 438 people were kidnapped for ransom in the West and Artibonite departments. The report also mentions sexual violence against women and young girls, intercepted by gang members during any journey.

Furthermore, the BIRTH reveals that 590 people were killed or injured during police operations or patrols, while specifying that some victims were apparently not involved in gang crimes.
Worse, some of these victims happened to be people with reduced mobility.

In order to counter this outbreak of gang violence, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti recommends that the international community keep Haiti on its agenda and accelerate the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission.

Selon le BINUH plus de 2500 personnes sont tuées ou blessées en Haïti durant le 1er trimestre 2024
