14 avril 1790 : Constitution in Saint Marc of a General Assembly composed of 212 members recruited mainly from white Creole planters, this assembly which opposed the representatives of the king in the colony, openly displayed its separatist tendencies and even published a constitution to this effect. His supporters, who wore a red cockade, went down in history as the “Red Pompoms”. Their adversaries, defenders of the governor and recruited from among the little whites, merchants and mulattoes, bore the name of “White Pompons”.
14 avril 1907 : Birth of François Duvalier
François Duvalier, president of Haiti from October 22, 1957 to April 21, 1971, was born in Port-au-Prince, not far from the presidential palace of Nord Alexis. A place of birth and residence which allowed him to experience very closely the sometimes bloody events marking the history of Haiti during the first decades of the 20th century.
He did his classical studies at the Lycée Pétion where he obtained his secondary school diploma in 1928, a diploma which opened the doors to the School of Medicine of Port-au-Prince.
