April 30, 1930: blessing of the Pétion-Ville – Kenscoff road

April 30, 1958: first plot against dictator François Duvalier

The plot was discovered following a premature explosion of a homemade bomb in Mahotière near Carrefour, then a suburb of Port-au-Prince. The conspirators including Yves Bajeux and Frank Léonard were immediately arrested. The former dictator François Duvalier, who had been inaugurated six months earlier, took advantage of the opportunity to get rid of some of his enemies, supporters of the unsuccessful candidate Louis Déjoie.

Without presidential elections having been planned, François Duvalier’s name appears on all the ballot papers, and a few days later, he will be declared re-elected.

A fact-finding mission from the Organization of American States (Oea) arrives in Port-au-Prince, following the violation of the Dominican Republic embassy by Haitian government troops.

The mission is welcomed by thousands of people who sing, dance and get drunk at the tafia. There are 30 to 40,000 according to certain witnesses, 100,000 according to the official press and 150,000 in Duvalier’s memoirs.

April 30, 2004: resolution establishing the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)

Following the hasty departure of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the UN has given itself a leading role in Haiti.

Already on the evening of February 29, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted for a Resolution authorizing the immediate deployment of a Multinational Interim Force (MIF). On this day, the same Council unanimously approved a new Resolution (1542) establishing, from June 1, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) which will be headed by a Special Representative of the Secretary General.

This force will be responsible for many misfortunes including the introduction of cholera into Haiti and rape of minors. His periodically renewed mandate will not definitively end until 2017.
