Was Ariel Henry slapped if not ridiculed at the 46th ordinary meeting of the Conference of Governments of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), in Georgetown (Guyana), where the Haitian question dominated the four-day gathering?
Indeed, on Monday February 26, 2024, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, derided him to the point of asking him to amicably withdraw from power in Haiti and allow the continuation of unhindered efforts to find a solution to the socio-economic and political situation in Haiti. “ With all due respect, my dear friend Henry, you are part of the problem and I believe there are many in Haiti who believe that the interventions planned by the stakeholder groups are intended to support you.”, his counterpart Gaston Browne told him
Meanwhile, in a telephone interview with the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC), Prime Minister Browne said he believed Henry’s presence in government made “part of the problem” as various stakeholders sought a lasting solution to Haiti’s problem which grew with the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 and the emergence of criminal gangs terrorizing citizens.
According to him, even before any intervention in Haiti to stabilize this French-speaking Caricom country, “ the political situation with Henry must be addressed, and he must be as generous as possible”wishes Prime Minister Browne, to the Caribbean media corporation (Cmc).
« Now, even if this is not the case, we must face this perception and we are of the opinion that Henry must transition and become an honest broker and enter into a power sharing agreement with others in Haiti so that it doesn’t give the impression that we are trying to stabilize Haiti for their sake so that they can continue. »
Asked about Henry’s position during regional leaders’ deliberations, Browne said the Haitian leader ” speaks well, but as I told him this morning in his presence, he must act,” he continued. « So we don’t judge him now on his joints. We are looking at his commitments in practice and it is what he would have done in the future that will determine whether he is a serious person who wants to see peace and stability in Haiti.”
Note that Haitian migrants in Guyana had protested against the presence of the criminal assassin Ariel Henry at the Conference of Governments of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
