August 8, 1912: Explosion of the National Palace
At 3 a.m., an explosion reduced the National Palace to ashes, burying President Cincinnatus Leconte and killing several hundred people. That same day, Tancred Augustus was made president. Leconte’s Cabinet lasted until September 16, 1912.
August 8, 1902: Arson in Petit-Goâve causing more than 400 victims
General Justin Carrié was accused of setting fire to the city just to dislodge the Firminists who were opposed to the government’s actions.
August 8, 1939: Ratification of the amendments to the 1935 Constitution
The Twenty Amendments to the 1935 Constitution voted on July 23 were ratified and promulgated by the National Assembly
