Stabbing attack at Sydney shopping center leaves at least six dead, several injured
It is in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney that ” several people “ were stabbed, Australian police said this Saturday. Six people were killed. Track “terrorist” was not ruled out.
The attack occurred at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in the city’s southeast, which was closed with Australian police calling on people to avoid the area. This attack left several injured, eight of whom, including a child, were transported to hospital, emergency services said.
“I am informed that five victims have died”said Anthony Cooke, deputy commissioner of the New South Wales state police. “One person died in hospital”added a police spokesperson to AFP a little later.
The New South Wales state ambulance service told AFP that a man had been shot dead by police, and that it was probably the attacker.
Witnesses said there was panic, with people running for cover as police tried to secure the area. Several people took refuge in a supermarket, where they stayed for about an hour.
Security camera footage broadcast by local media showed a man running through the mall with a large knife in his hand and injured people lying on the ground. “The first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones”wrote on the social network Anthony Albanese.
