Police in the Bahamas say a well-known politician has been shot dead while fleeing masked gunmen.

Good Friday March 29, 2024 ((rezonodwes.com))-A well-known Bahamian politician was shot and killed Wednesday during an armed robbery, police said.

Two gunmen opened fire on a group of people outside an unspecified business establishment in a neighborhood near Nassau, the capital, but only one person was killed.

Don Saunders, a former parliamentarian and vice-president of the Free National Movement Party, died at the scene late Wednesday, according to authorities. He was 49 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the shocking murder of our colleague and friend, FNM Deputy President Don Saunders,” wrote parliamentarian and FNM party leader Michael C. Pintard in a social media post . “We are still gathering all the facts to deal with this tragedy. On behalf of my wife Berlice and myself, I send my most sincere condolences to Don’s family.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement that the shooting happened before 9 p.m. Wednesday evening in Gambier Village, a community just west of Nassau. The investigation is ongoing, but initial reports indicate the victim was sitting outside the establishment with other patrons when two masked gunmen approached them and demanded money.
