United States Expresses Serious Concerns Over Venezuelan Election Results
TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed in Tokyo on Monday the United States’ “serious concerns” over the reported outcome of Venezuela’s highly contested presidential election, which officials say was won by incumbent President Nicolas Maduro.
Blinken said the United States doubts that this result reflects the will or votes of the Venezuelan people. He called on election officials to release the full results transparently and immediately, saying the United States and the international community would respond accordingly.
“We have taken note of the announcement made recently by the Venezuelan Electoral Commission,” he said. “We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.”
Blinken stressed the importance of counting every vote fairly and transparently, sharing information immediately with the opposition and independent observers, and publishing the vote tally. “The international community is monitoring this situation very closely and will respond accordingly,” he added.
