Haitian immigrant accused of child rape released on $500 bail
In a controversial legal development, a judge in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, recently set bail at just $500 for a Haitian immigrant accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in March. The alleged incident occurred at a Comfort Inn hotel in Rockland, Massachusetts, currently being used as a migrant shelter.
Cory Alvarez, 26, pleaded not guilty in Hingham District Court to one count of aggravated rape of a child.
Cory Alvarez, 26, is accused of raping the girl, who, like him, is of Haitian descent. According to Boston.com, the victim said through an interpreter that she was taken to Alvarez’s room and assaulted. However, a report from the Department of Children and Families found no physical injuries during the examination..
Alvarez’s attorney, Brian A. Kelley, pointed to several complicating factors in the case, including the lack of injuries to the victim and video surveillance showing her entering and exiting Alvarez’s room without incident, passing members of the National Guard.
