To help the Haitian population facing downpours and gusts of wind during the passage of Hurricane Beryl over the Caribbean Sea and the southern coast of Haiti, the World Food Programme (WFP) promises to support between 50 and 60 thousand people.

In a post on social media, the WFP said it was “available” to the Haitian authorities to “support” the population in the face of the threat of Hurricane Beryl.

“WFP is at the disposal of local authorities and ready to support 50-60,000 people, in collaboration with local partners,” the UN agency said.

WFP is promising hot meals, cash assistance and logistical support, among other things, to help Haitians during the passage of Beryl, which caused downpours and strong gusts of wind in several departments, including the south, Grand-Anse, the South-East and Nippes on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.

Authorities have declared an orange alert on the southern coast of Haiti and are urging the population to follow safety instructions.

For his part, the Haitian Prime Minister, Garry Conille, said he had mobilized his government to come to the aid of citizens.
