Coffee and hypertension: friends or foes? advice from cardiologist Pr Xavier Girerd.
Drinking coffee when you suffer from hypertension is often perceived as harmful. However, according to Professor Xavier Girerd, cardiologist at Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, coffee could actually be beneficial for these people. Coffee, known for its stimulating properties, particularly cardiovascular, has no negative consequences on blood pressure when consumed in moderation. The specialist’s comments can be found on the FemmeActuelle website.
Professor Girerd explains that even though coffee slightly increases the heart rate after consumption, this does not mean that blood pressure increases. In fact, studies show that regular consumers of moderate coffee (1 to 3 cups per day) may have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, without negative effects on their blood pressure, including in those who suffer from hypertension.
It is important to note that the effect of coffee on blood pressure can vary depending on how it is prepared. Drip coffee, especially when the filter is white, may even help lower blood pressure.
The Pr Girerd recommends not changing your consumption habits if you are already a coffee drinker, even if you have high blood pressure. However, he advises against starting to drink coffee after a diagnosis of high blood pressure if you did not drink it before, because the effects of caffeine can be more pronounced in new consumers.
Thus, moderate and regular consumption of coffee is not only safe for hypertensive patients, but can also be beneficial for their cardiovascular health.
