Canada increased its contribution to the UN Trust Fund for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) in Haiti on Wednesday, June 26.
Canada has decided to strengthen its support for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) in Haiti by adding an additional financial contribution, Global Affairs Canada announced on Wednesday, June 26.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mélanie Joly, announced today that the Government of Canada will provide new funding of $5.7 million in support of Haiti, in addition to the $12.5 million previously announced.”, we could read on the Global Affairs Canada website.
The statement goes on to say that Canada is working with mission contributing countries to provide training to deployed officers and put in place mechanisms to prevent human rights violations, including sexual and gender-based violence.
In addition, the Canada reaffirmed its willingness to strengthen the Haitian National Police (PNH), judging this approach as the best solution to ensure security in the country. “This “The funding, channeled through the United Nations Trust Fund for Haiti, will support the deployment of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MAS) to assist the Haitian National Police (HNP) in improving security conditions in Haiti,” the Canadian statement said.
Canada indicates that the Trust Fund will contribute to making the mandate of the MAS mission possible and operational by financing a series of components, including the reimbursement of police contingents deployed as part of the mission, support relating to training and supporting mission elements such as respect for human rights.
