Concacaf U-17 Women’s Championship: Haitian nugget Lourdjina Étienne finishes best player in the competition.
After the United States’ 4-0 victory over Mexico, the U-17 women’s championship of the Concacaf ended this Sunday, February 11, 2024. Eliminated in the semi-final, the Haitian national selection is automatically eliminated for the next World Cup in this category which will take place at the end of this year in the Dominican Republic but a rising star among the Grenadières caught the eye of thousands of observers during this competition. The young Haitian nugget, Lourdjina Étienne, received the prize for best player of the competition.
To justify the choice of Lourdjina Étienne, the Concacaf website recalled that the presence of the Haitian nugget was important for the national team. She scored eight of Haiti’s nine goals during the tournament. “She started by scoring the team’s first two goals in a 2-1 win over Costa Rica to open the tournament, followed by a total of four goals in the 5-3 win over El Salvador. Etienne then scored both of Haiti’s goals in the knockout stage, scoring in the semi-final against the United States and in the third place match against Canada.underlined Concacaf.
The top scorer went to American Kennedy Fuller who also scored eight goals during the tournament. Mexican Camila Vasquez received the award for best goalkeeper.
This 8th edition of the Concacaf U17 women’s championship was important for Haiti for qualification for the FIFA World Cup. The tournament took place in Toluca, Mexico, with the participation of eight selections which were divided into two groups: Mexico, Haiti, Costa Rica and Salvador in Group A, while the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Panama are in Group B. The first two of each group qualified for the semi-finals and the two finalists (winners of the 1/2 finals) validated their ticket for the FIFA World Cup from October 16 to November 3 2024 in the Dominican Republic.
