Conmebol warns Colombian fans of violent acts: US authorities may take legal action during Copa America final

In a letter signed by José Astigarraga, secretary general of Conmebol, addressed to Édgar Monroy, Colombian consul in Miami, Conmebol warned of the measures that the US authorities could take against fans involved in acts of violence during the Copa América final. This warning follows the violent incidents that occurred during the semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay.

Investigation and potential sanctions

After the serious incidents of violence that broke out in the stands of the Charlotte stadium at the end of the match, Conmebol opened an investigation to determine the sanctions against those responsible. The Uruguayan players expressed their concerns for the safety of their families, who were present in the stands at the time of the events. Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, said that some players had reacted instinctively to protect their loved ones, thus exacerbating the situation.

Warning to Colombian fans

The letter from Conmebol, signed by José Astigarraga, asks the Colombian consul in Miami to communicate to Colombian fans traveling to the final against Argentina that the American authorities may take legal, criminal and administrative action against those who commit acts of violence. The statement specifies that civil and criminal measures may be taken for acts of violence inside and around the stadium.

Progress of the investigation

To date, Conmebol has not provided an update on the ongoing investigation. However, according to Uruguayan sports daily Ovación, the situation appears unfavorable for the Uruguayan team, with nine players and a manager potentially involved in the incidents. Among the players involved are José María Giménez, Mathías Olivera, Ronald Araujo and Darwin Núñez.

Incidents involving Uruguayan leaders

Incidents were also reported in the VIP stands where the Uruguayan federation officials were seated. One official reportedly threw a glass filled with ice towards the celebrating Colombian fans, prompting an attempt by a Colombian fan to climb into the VIP stand, which ultimately failed.
