An American study compared the nutritional qualities of dozens of cow’s milk yogurts and yogurts made from vegetable milk. Are some better than others for your health? Here are the scientists’ conclusions.

Products classified according to their nutritional density

Each yogurt obtained a score indicating its nutritional quality. To determine a score for each product, scientists compared the amount of desirable nutrients (protein, fiber, calcium) and those that are best reduced (bad fats, sugars and salt) in each of them.

The products analyzed were then classified according to their nutritional density. Those with a high score were considered good for health and those with a low score were considered bad for health.

Almond-based yogurts on the top step of the podium

Here is the ranking of the products analyzed by the researchers:

  1. almond-based yogurts;
  2. oat-based yogurts;
  3. low-fat dairy products;
  4. full-fat dairy products;
  5. plant-based cashew yogurts;
  6. Coconut-based plant-based yogurts.

Plant milks/cow’s milk: each has its advantages and disadvantages

This study showed that the yogurts made with almond milk were more nutritionally interesting compared to other yogurts. Researchers indicate that plant-based yogurts are overall lower in sugar and sodium and contain more fiber than yogurts made from cow’s milk.

However, plant-based options provide less protein, calcium and potassium than dairy products. We cannot therefore say that plant versions are better than animal versions.

To benefit from all the nutrients necessary for the proper functioning of the human body, it is essential to have a balanced and diversified diet. The ideal is to vary the plant sources and animal sources in our diet.
