The war between Israel and Hamas is bringing the killings of journalists to a devastating level in 2023, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a report on the killing of journalists around the world during 2023. According to CPJ officials, of the 99 journalists and media workers killed last year, three-quarters of them died in the war between Israel and Gaza. Kathy Jones, deputy editorial director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, author of the report, also explained the methodology the institution used to draft the document.

“More than three-quarters of the 99 journalists and media workers killed worldwide in 2023 died in the war between Israel and Gaza, the majority of them Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza. The conflict has cost more journalists their lives in three months than have ever been lost in a single country in an entire year.we read in the report of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Separately, CPJ highlighted that the global total for 2023 is the highest since 2015 and an increase of almost 44% over 2022 figures.

Once deaths in Gaza, Israel, and Lebanon were excluded, killings were down significantly compared to 2022, when CPJ recorded a total of 69 deaths, including 43 work-related deaths. Aside from deaths in the Israel-Gaza war, 22 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide in 2023.

CPJ research confirmed that 13 of these deaths were work-related; the circumstances of the other deaths remain under investigation. In the 18 other countries where journalists died in 2023, CPJ recorded one to two deaths in each.

Remember that the International Federation of Journalists published its report on December 31 on the number of deaths of journalists around the world. According to the document, 120 journalists and media workers, including 11 women, were killed last year. 68% of them were victims in the conflict in Gaza, Palestine, according to the IFJ.
