The Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) on Monday requested from the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) a document detailing the problems of the judicial system in Haiti and the presentation of the CSPJ budget before the budget conference.
On Monday, July 8, 2024, a meeting was held between the Presidential Transitional Council and the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) to address the challenges of the judicial system in Haiti. The presidential team, represented by Emmanuel Vertilaire, Louis Gérald Gilles and Smith Augustin, discussed the critical conditions in which magistrates operate while requesting a document detailing the problems of the judicial system and the presentation of the CSPJ budget before the budget conference.
“The President-Councillors asked the CSPJ for a document detailing the problems of the judicial system […] with a view to deciding on the various problems facing the judicial system, in particular the dysfunction of certain courts and the low budget allocated to the CSPJ,” we can read on the Facebook page of the Presidency of Haiti.
Smith Augustin, for his part, requested a detailed report on the functioning of the judicial system and the presentation of the CSPJ budget before the budget conference, reports the Presidency.
During this meeting, the President of the CSPJ, Jean Joseph Lebrun, congratulated the Presidential Transitional Council for this working session, which allows to address the problems of the judicial system. For his part, the Councilor-President Emmanuel Vertilaire praised the courage of the magistrates who, despite precarious conditions, continue to serve the population. Furthermore, he hoped that the magistrates would do their best to have an efficient and fair judicial system, reports the presidency on Facebook.
During this meeting, Louis Gérald Gilles thanked the CSPJ for highlighting the current challenges and called for an improvement in the salary conditions of magistrates.
Note that a new working session, involving the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Justice and Finance, as well as the CSPJ, is planned soon.
