Les Cayes (Haiti), July 4, 2024 [AlterPresse] — Floods and immense material damage to housing and the agricultural sector were recorded in several municipalities in the great South of Haiti, during the passage of major hurricane Beryl, on Tuesday July 2 and Wednesday July 3, 2024, according to a report, drawn up by the departmental directorate of civil protection of the South, after the passage of cyclone Beryl, on Tuesday July 2 and Wednesday July 3, 2024, over the Republic of Haiti, and transmitted to the online agency AlterPresse.

This report concerns 20 municipalities in the South, including Les Cayes (the main city in economic importance in the South department) and various coastal towns in the South.

These are the coastal towns of Aquin, Saint-Louis du Sud, Les Cayes, Île-à-Vache, Saint-Jean du Sud, Torbeck, Port-Salut, Roche-à-Bateau, Port-à-Piment, Chardonnières, Côteaux, Les Anglais, Tiburon, and the other towns of Cavaillon, Maniche, Arniquet, Chantal, Ducis, Camp Perrin.

No material damage was reported in Fond-des-Blancs.

Floods in Les Cayes and on Île-à-Vache

Around fifteen households (including 8 girls and 4 boys aged 0 to 8) had to be housed in the Philippe Guerrier High School in Les Cayes, after being affected by the flooding of their homes.

The streets of Chatodin, du quai, the first main street in Les Cayes were flooded.

On the Icaques peninsula, around ten houses were also flooded by the effects of marine submersion from the Cayes Sea.

On Île-à-Vache, marine submersions flooded homes in Pierre le Nantais, Ilet à Brouée and Caille-à-l’eau, as well as in coastal areas (Madame Bernard, Pointesque, Soulette, Grand Sable, Caille Coq, Source Bombara, Cocoyer, Anse-à-Canot).

Fishing boats destroyed and plantations devastated

The strong sea waves destroyed and swept away many fishing boats in Aquin, Saint-Louis du Sud, Les Cayes, Île-à-Vache, Saint-Jean du Sud, Torbeck, Port-Salut, Roche-à-Bateau, Port-à-Piment, Chardonnières, Côteaux, Les Anglais and Tiburon.

Several plantations were devastated during the heavy rains in these coastal municipalities as well as in other non-coastal municipalities in the Sud department, notes the Sud departmental civil protection.

In Port Salut, the roofs of some homes were also damaged during the strong winds and rainfall.
