THE HAITI FACTOR, November 22, 2024._The Dominican authorities are ready to rebuild ties after the conflict that broke out between the two Nations resulting from the construction of the Canal on the Massacre River.
To lay the foundations for a new start, the Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste met on Thursday, November 21, the Dominican Ambassador to Haiti, Faruk Miguel Castillo.
They discussed common issues to strengthen ties between the two nations through bilateral dialogue, according to a publication from the Ministry on its official Facebook page.
The meeting was also an opportunity for both parties to discuss other concerns, including the situation of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic, security on the Haitian-Dominican border and the economy.
For his part, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé says he is in favor of a fraternal dialogue between the Haitian and Dominican authorities on the situation of Haitians living on Dominican territory.
According to the Head of Government, this dialogue must be conducted in compliance with treaties, international conventions dealing with fundamental rights and those of migrants.
As a reminder, several thousand Haitians have been deported from the Dominican Republic in inhumane conditions, while others are imprisoned by the country’s migration authorities following the announcement of deportation of 50 thousand Haitians per month made by President Luis Abinader.
