The bathroom can be a real bacteria nest if it is not properly maintained. In a video published on his Instagram account, Dr Karan Rangarajan, a British doctor and surgeon better known as Dr Karan Rajan on social networks, warns of the presence of a pink viscous substance which can occur in a bathroom. Called withering sawdustthis bacteria can have harmful effects on health. We take stock.
Presence of pink marks in your bathroom, what are the health risks?
“If you’ve noticed this sort of pink slime in your bathroom, it’s not moldbut bacteria, particularly one called serratia marcescens, which releases a bright pink pigment throughout your bathroom”features Dr. Karan Rangarajan. The doctor explains that these bacteria proliferate in damp places and “greasy deposits, like those found in soaps and shampoos.”
Dr Karan Rangaraja, however, wants to be reassuring: “for most people, it’s pretty harmless”but he still warns that “if you come into contact with it, but it’s best to avoid getting it in your eyes or open wounds.” In immunocompromised people, it can cause certain symptoms, such as urinary infections or lung infections.
How to reduce the risk of the presence of serratia marcescens in a bathroom?
In his video, Dr. Karan Rangarajan specifies that “If your home is humid enough for this pink slime to grow regularly, you could also have other problems, like actual household mold.”. These can have deleterious effects on health and lead to respiratory problems or allergies.
In the event of the presence of withering sawdustmaterialized by a pink viscous substance, the doctor insists on the importance of limiting its spread to “also prevent the appearance of other dangerous molds”. To do this, it is advisable to:
- keep your shower or bathtub dry and ventilated;
- use a shower aerator;
- open the window closest to the shower;
- clean and disinfect the bathroom regularly.
