Matcha tea is a variety of green tea. Its high antioxidant content makes this drink a real ally for your health. Discover all the benefits of matcha tea.
A powerful cocktail of antioxidants
The matcha tea is rich in catechins, polyphenols present in green tea and which act as natural antioxidants.
As a reminder, antioxidants help fight against the damage caused by free radicals on our cells. This is called oxidative stress, a risk factor for chronic diseases.
A study in mice showed that consuming matcha tea (in supplement form) helped reduce damage caused by free radicals.
By consuming matcha regularly, you considerably increase your intake of antioxidants, which reduces your risk of developing severe chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, etc.).
A protected liver
The liver plays an essential role in the body as it eliminates waste and toxins from the body.
Several studies have shown that matcha tea helps keep our liver healthy. In 2015, a review of 15 studies suggested that green tea consumption was associated with a reduced risk of liver disease.
Boosted cognitive functions
Compounds found in matcha tea may affect brain function. A study of 23 people analyzed how well the participants performed a series of exercises designed to measure brain function.
One group was asked to drink matcha tea or a cereal bar containing 4 g of matcha. The other group, the control group, was asked to drink a placebo tea or a cereal bar without matcha.
People who consumed matcha had a better “cognitive” score compared to people in the control group. Their attention, reaction time and memorization were better compared to people in the control group.
A shield against cancer?
Matcha tea contains compounds known to reduce the risk of cancer. In particular, it contains epigallocatechin gallate, a type of catechin with recognized anti-cancer properties.
Weight loss aid
Green tea is known to promote weight loss. It is also one of the star ingredients in dietary supplements that help with weight loss.
In 2020, a review of studies concluded that, combined with dietary measures and regular physical activity, daily consumption of green tea (500 mg per day) for 12 weeks would help reduce body mass index (BMI).
