On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Donald Trump’s campaign released an update on the former president’s health, a week after he survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The memo, written by Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, a former Trump White House physician, details the nature of Trump’s injuries and the treatment he received immediately after the attack.
According to Jackson, Trump was shot in the right ear with a high-powered rifle, passing less than a quarter-inch from his head and striking the top of his right ear. The bullet’s trajectory produced a 2-centimeter-wide wound, reaching the cartilaginous surface of the ear.
Despite significant initial swelling and intermittent bleeding, the wound is beginning to heal properly. Trump was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital, where a CT scan of the head was performed to assess for possible other injuries. Further evaluations, including a complete hearing exam, will be needed.
Jackson has said Trump is recovering as expected and that no stitches were needed due to the large and blunt nature of the wound. Trump attended his first rally since the attack in Grand Rapids, Michigan, accompanied by his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
Ronny Jackson, deeply concerned about Trump’s well-being, met with him in Bedminster, New Jersey, after he returned from Pennsylvania to offer his assistance. He has been assessing and treating Trump’s wound daily ever since.
The Trump campaign has yet to respond to questions about the incident. Last year, another doctor, Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald, released a letter regarding Joe Biden’s health on his 81st birthday, noting that he had been Trump’s doctor since 2021.
