After a notable absence since his last songs “Mache Dwat” and “Ewa”, Donaldzie Théodore made a reappearance in the Haitian musical landscape with his new title “M Pi Fò”, released on June 26.
This song, loaded with emotions and deep messages according to her, marks a new chapter in the career of the artist, who shared her thoughts and motivations during an exclusive interview with Loop Haiti.
“M Pi Fò”, according to Donaldzie, “is a claim of our right to exist. It is wanting, despite defeats and disappointments, to nourish our aspirations. It is recognizing what makes us strong, finding serenity in chaos, rekindling our flame, finding ourselves, inspiring and enlightening others,” she explains.
The inspiration behind “M Pi Fò” came to the pianist in a moment of inner searching: “M Pi Fò was born some time ago, but this text made more and more sense to my life as I went through very complicated trials and especially overcoming them first by the strength of believing that I could do it. Looking back at the path I have traveled and visualizing the road I still have to take, this title takes on its full importance,” she confides.
Asked what she wants her audience to take away from this song, Donaldzie says: “M Pi Fò is certainly a way to cheer myself up, but it’s a song that I offer to the audience who will find themselves in their own way in its words, make it their own, define it according to their various experiences, their collective and personal struggles.”
For her, “M Pi Fò” also represents a constant reminder of her own personal resilience. “I think that from now on M Pi Fò will remind me of who I am. It will be my source of motivation and courage for a very long time,” she shares.
The writing of “M Pi Fò” was done spontaneously, capturing the essence of her emotions and thoughts in just a few hours. “I was working on the arrangement of “Mache Dwat”, and between two or three chords, two or three ideas that crossed my mind, the melody and the first lyrics appeared. So I took a few hours to put everything in order and voilà! “M Pi Fò” is a fairly spontaneous inspiration, coming like an instinctive cry for survival,” she explains.
On the question of who this song is specifically aimed at, the singer of “Mache Dwat” is clear: “I think we all have a great reason to hold on, no matter how many times we try or how many times we fail. “M Pi Fò” is about realizing that.”
Comparing “M Pi Fò” to her previous songs like “Mache Dwat” and “Ewa”, she points out: “When you look closely, they are three fairly connected texts! (Laughs) Different certainly, in terms of color, atmosphere… but quite close in spirit.”
As for her future plans, Donaldzie remains cautious: “We can come back to it,” she tells our editorial staff.
She concludes with a message of hope and solidarity for her supporters and for Haiti: “We all need to find our deep strength again, because everything seems to be set up to make us lose our essence, our inner light. Let’s stay standing, let’s continue to believe in our values and our dreams. Let’s be stronger than ever and inspire others with our courage, our positivity and our pride!!! NOU PI FÒ!!!”
