In the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, eight people were killed in a new attack carried out by militiamen from the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (Codeco).
The incursion, which occurred on Tuesday, July 2, in the agglomeration of Kilo-Etat, in the territory of Djugu, Ituri province, left four women, two children and two young people among the victims, according to the chief of the Banyali-Kilo chiefdom, Mutukadala Innocent. The population had to flee into the bush before the intervention of the Congolese army, which managed to repel the attackers.
Despite the signing of peace agreements last April with the Congolese authorities, Codeco militiamen continue to target civilians, intensifying their attacks. Since 2017, these militiamen have been accused of numerous abuses by the UN, spreading terror in a region already marked by insecurity and intercommunal violence.
The situation remains worrying, and the international community is calling for concrete action to put an end to this violence.
