Ecuador calls for urgent deployment of multinational security support mission in Haiti

The representative of Ecuador considered that the increasing coordination of criminal gangs in Haiti to carry out simultaneous attacks against the population, critical infrastructure and State institutions requires the urgent application of all the tools approved by the Council of security to restore security and stability to the country.

The rapid deployment of the multinational security support mission authorized by resolution 2699 (2023) is therefore necessary today, with the support of the international community, both in terms of contribution to the trust fund and personnel. . According to him, this is the first step to strengthen Haitian institutions and restore the country’s governance.

Likewise, continued the delegate, it is essential to update the list of sanctions and adopt measures to prevent the transfer of weapons into the hands of unauthorized actors, in accordance with the territorial embargo on weapons.

In order to achieve coordinated and rapid responses to restore the rule of law in Haiti, the representative considered it crucial that political dialogue between Haitian actors continues. Additionally, Haitian institutions must be supported to investigate crimes such as mass murders, kidnappings, child recruitment and sexual violence.

In this regard, the representative stressed the importance of strengthening the judicial system and the capacities of the Haitian security forces to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The delegate also welcomed the adoption of the decree of April 12 and 16 creating the Presidential Transitional Council, while noting that the good offices of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be essential to the continuation of the dialogue.

“Today more than ever, the international community must redouble its support and solidarity with Haiti in a coordinated and sustained manner,” he concluded.
