The situation in Guayaquil, Ecuador, is particularly alarming.

Nearly 200 decomposing bodies are found in this city, the largest in the country. These corpses, often unidentified, have been decomposing, some for more than two months. Authorities have not provided a precise figure, but some press reports put the number at around 200 bodies.

This dramatic situation is largely due to the war declared since the beginning of January against the 22 organized crime groups, now considered terrorists by the government. This struggle has resulted in a high number of casualties, many more than before.

Many of these victims are unidentified, often members of gangs who kill each other. Even when they are identified, it often happens that families do not come to collect the bodies, which then accumulate in the morgue. This accumulation of unclaimed bodies compounds the problem of decomposition and poses additional challenges for local authorities and health services.

The state of decomposition of many bodies is so advanced that it is impossible to obtain fingerprints; it is therefore necessary to use genetic profiles and a parent to compare them.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 1,300 crimes have been recorded in Guayaquil, but bodies from many other places arrive in these laboratories. Here the bodies of those shot, asphyxiated and mutilated from nearby Durán, Posorja, Playas, Tenguel, Samborondón and Daule are examined. L
