P-au-P, August 7, 2024 [AlterPresse] — 52 earthquakes, with magnitudes between 1.1 and 3.3, were recorded, from July 1 to 31, 2024, on the territory of the Republic of Haiti, indicates a bulletin from the Bureau of Mines and Energy (Bme), responsible for the Technical Unit of Seismology (Uts), consulted by the online agency AlterPresse.
42 seismic tremors have been recorded for the month of June 2024, adds the Bme.
Of the earthquakes recorded, 48% occurred at sea, including 5 along the northern fault (North). This suggests a risk of tsunami if the conditions had been met, he warns.
“During the month of July 2024, the 3 most affected departments are Nippes with 17 earthquakes, or 32.69%, the North-West with 15 earthquakes, or 28.85% and the West with 8 earthquakes, or 15.38%.”
Of the 52 earthquakes recorded, or 76.9%, 40 were recorded in these three geographical departments in Haiti.
Furthermore, 194 seismic tremors on the entire island, of which 193 (99.48%) were of magnitudes less than 3.9, were recorded in July 2024 by the Loyola Polytechnic Seismological Observatory (Ospl) in the Dominican Republic.
Of the 194 tremors recorded, about 25% occurred in Haiti and 75% in the Dominican Republic.
“The seismicity in the neighboring territory of Haiti (48,442 km2) is three times greater than in Haiti (27,750 km2). This seismic activity has been shown to be more intense in the northern part of the Dominican Republic.”
208 earthquakes, with magnitudes between 0.9 and 4.4, were recorded from January to April 2024.in the country, the Bme had announced.
An average of 52 earthquakes per month were recorded.
The Bme recorded 58 earthquakes (highest number) during the month of March 2024, compared to 42 earthquakes (lowest number) for the month of January 2024.
