Portugal survived a thrilling match against Slovenia to progress to the quarter-finals, thanks to a spectacular performance from Diogo Costa in the penalty shootout.

The match started at a frantic pace, with Portugal leading the early attacks. Rafael Leão and Rúben Dias both flirted with opening the scoring, but the Slovenian defence held firm.

The Portuguese continued to press, with Cristiano Ronaldo narrowly missing a header that could have made the difference. Slovenia’s world-class goalkeeper Jan Oblak also had to work hard to keep out the Portuguese onslaught, including a dangerous free-kick from Ronaldo.

Slovenia, meanwhile, gradually found their feet and Benjamin Šeško nearly surprised Diogo Costa with a long-range effort. João Palhinha also hit the post just before half-time, underlining the Seleção’s constant threat.

The second half started with just as much intensity, with Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva narrowly missing out on converting chances into goals. Oblak was once again heroic against Ronaldo, pushing away a powerful free-kick that could have changed the game.

Extra time kept the suspense going until Diogo Jota, with a daring breakthrough, won a penalty for Portugal. Ronaldo came forward, but Oblak once again saved his team with a remarkable save.

The match eventually went to penalties, with Diogo Costa taking centre stage. The young Portuguese goalkeeper stopped Slovenia’s first three attempts, paving the way for victory. Cristiano Ronaldo converted his spot-kick, and Bernardo Silva sealed Portugal’s qualification.

Diogo Costa, in particular, shone. Not only was he impeccable in the penalty shootout, but he also made a crucial extra-time save against Šeško. His unwavering focus and performance under pressure underline his potential as a top-class goalkeeper, capable of shining in decisive moments.

Portugal thus advances in the competition with confidence, thanks to a solid collective performance and the individual brilliance of Diogo Costa in a match that will remain etched in the memories for its tension and suspense. The Portuguese will therefore meet the Blues in the quarter-finals.
