Euro 2024: Squadra Azzura out of the competition by the Nati

By Mythsouka Jean-Philippe

Saturday, June 29, the knockout rounds begin. Italy is the first victim against Switzerland (2-0). It was in a very interesting match that the Swiss team achieved this feat, allowing them to qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

The Swiss, quarter-finalists in the last edition, showed their mastery of the game from the 37th minute with a decisive goal from Remo Freuler, following a caviar provided by Ruben Vargas. This first goal was followed just after half-time by a superb curling strike from Vargas himself, which deceived Gianluigi Donnaruma in the Italian net.

Despite the efforts of Italy, who tried to defend their title with determination, Switzerland maintained their advantage until the final whistle. This victory marks a turning point in the tournament, confirming Switzerland as a formidable and undefeated team in this edition of the Euro. The Swiss thus become the first to qualify for the quarter-finals, leaving behind a disappointed Italy but which showed a robust game throughout the competition.

Switzerland’s performance once again underlines the unpredictability of international football, where favourites can be toppled at any moment. The rest of Euro 2024 therefore promises even more surprises and suspense as other teams now aim for the same success that the Swiss have achieved today.
