FC Nantes suffered another defeat on the road, this time against RC Lens (3-2), during the 11th day of Ligue 1. After being led 2-1 since the 71st minute, Antoine Kombouaré’s men conceded two goals in the last four minutes of regulation time, sinking into new disillusionment.
The match, played at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, started at a frantic pace, and although the Nantes residents opened the scoring with a timely goal, they quickly saw RC Lens come back and then take the advantage. Trailing 2-1 at the hour mark, the Canaries believed in a turnaround, but their lack of defensive solidity was costly at the end of the match.
Jean-Kévin Duverne, starter for this match, played the entire match in central defense. Despite his combativeness and his involvement, the Haitian defender could not prevent the Lensois from snatching victory in the last moments of the match, with two goals in quick succession in the 86th and 89th minute.
This defeat, the third in a row for FC Nantes, plunges the club even further into a crisis of results. The club remains provisionally 14th in the ranking with 2 wins and 4 draws in 11 days, a disappointing record for a team which is struggling to regain its form from last season. Since the start of the school year in September, the Canaries have failed to achieve a single victory, which puts Antoine Kombouaré under pressure.
The Nantes coach must now find the keys to redress the situation, because the situation is becoming more and more worrying. The team’s lack of consistency, particularly in defense, and errors in concentration at the end of the match seem to be the main causes of these disappointing results.
FC Nantes will have to react quickly to avoid falling to the bottom of the rankings. The next meeting will be crucial for the rest of the season, and the team will need to pull itself together in order to get back on the path to victory and escape this negative spiral. Jean-Kévin Duverne, who once again showed his professionalism on the field, will have a key role to play in the defensive solidity of the Canaries during the next rounds.
