During a joint press briefing on Monday, July 8, Godfrey Otunge, head of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, resolutely affirmed that there is no room for failure. Alongside the Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police, he promised to guarantee democratic elections in Haiti.
This statement marks the first public statement by Mr. Otunga, reiterating the commitment of the Kenyan police to work to stabilize the situation in the country. Mr. Otunge stressed the close collaboration with the Haitian authorities and international partners, affirming the willingness of the multinational forces to restore peace throughout the national territory.
With a mandate regulated by Resolution 2699, the mission plans to support the Haitian National Police and conduct targeted operations against gangs. Kenyan efforts will soon be reinforced by police from other nations, for a total of 2,500 members, aimed at creating the necessary conditions for free and fair elections.
