The Haitian community in Florida expressed gratitude Friday to the Biden administration for redesignating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals for a period of eighteen months.
About 309,000 Haitian migrants, nearly 50 percent of whom reside in Florida, could be newly eligible for the measure, announced this week and reported by the Miami Herald. Florida political and community leaders hailed the move as a critical step for Haitians seeking a better life.
At the same time, they urged Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to stop all deportations to Haiti, highlighting the alarming situation caused by armed gangs. They also asked the White House to support strong and sustainable infrastructure in Haiti to reduce the forced exodus of Haitians.
