Prime Minister Garry Conille and Presidential Advisor Louis Gerald Gilles visited the General Hospital, currently under the control of the Haitian National Police (PNH), on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. The two officials, accompanied by the Director General of the Police Normil Rameau, were able to see for themselves the damage caused by the bandits.
Yesterday, during a press conference, the Acting Director General of the PNH, Rameau Normil, had informed that the police institution had regained control of the premises of the General Hospital. Today, this information was confirmed by a visit to the site. Although rumors suggest tensions between the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) and the head of government, Garry Conille was accompanied by Louis Gérald Gilles, member of the CPT.
“Today is an important day. It’s a first step. It’s a strong signal that we are sending to the population. We are fighting against physical insecurity, but also against health insecurity,” declared Louis Gérald Gilles before handing over to Garry Conille, the Prime Minister.
The head of government expressed his sadness at seeing the deplorable state of the General Hospital, where he did his residency during his medical training. “The hospital, in all countries of the world, is not a space of war. The hospital does not have the right to be a space of war. We are not going to accept it,” said Garry Conille while visiting the premises of the General Hospital.
The head of government promised to work to allow all Haitians to receive the necessary care by regaining control of hospitals. He called on the population to be patient in order to achieve better results. “We are not going to lose the battle,” he said, announcing that cleaning work will soon be undertaken in the vicinity of the hospital.
The Prime Minister particularly thanked the Director General of the PNH for the efforts that made it possible to retake the premises of the General Hospital. He also urged the police officers to continue their work with dedication in order to facilitate an improvement in living conditions for the population.
